Depending on whether you have a belt chain or screw drive system the grinding noise may be due to a worn or broken gear chain or belt. If you hear a garage door grinding noise it could be the rollers.

A grinding noise that appears to be coming from the opener motor may indicate an issue with one or more internal moving parts. If it still makes the same noise then the problem is with your garage door. The main drive gear is the plastic gear that comes in direct contact with the worm drive gear on the motor. Replace the gear and sprocket assembly or the drive and worm gears when they re worn and making noises.

A constant grinding noise could be a sign that your garage door opener s chain or belt is either too loose or too tight either way it needs adjusting. Grinding noises can either be caused by the garage door or the opener unit. Make sure that you do proper testing to find out what is really wrong with your opener. First disconnect the opener and open the garage door manually.

A worn belt or chain and cable assembly can also make noise tighten chain or belt tension to correct this problem.
